About the Foundation
What does the foundation do?
The foundation is raising funds to promote awareness and education on the importance of early detection. In addition, the foundation is working with St. Peter's University Hospital in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and local radiology centers. As the results of our donations, uninsured women ages 40 or older can get free mammograms and free doctor's visits to read those screenings as well as help deal with the results.
Who started the foundation?
The foundation was started by friends and family of Amy Feiman Behar, who died March 2007 after a six year battle with breast cancer. They are determined to prevent the painful losses that could be avoided if tumors are diagnosed earlier.
Who oversees the funding operations?
The board consists of eight members who oversee the allocation of funds. The members include a nurse, an attorney, a member of the clergy and two business leaders.
Is it a 501(c)(3) approved?
Yes he foundation is an approved charity, which means all donations are tax deductible.
Where does the money go? How is this determined?
Each year, the board determines where the foundation allocates the funds. The criteria for allocation will be efficacy of educational programs and ability to reach the greatest number of woman for awareness of early detection. Based on the amount raised, the board will recommend the number of mammograms the foundation should purchase.
How do you verify and check that the money is being used for the right purposes?
As stated in our bylaws, an annual financial statement will be prepared by the foundation trustees. The statement will include income and expenses for the year and that statement will be available to the public on request. Since the foundation is staffed entirely by volunteers. There are no administrative costs and 100% of the money goes to helping the women who need it.
What is your 5-year goal for this foundation?
This foundation started as a local organization that will provide for the needs of our community in Central New Jersey. But this is not a local problem. This disease affects women everywhere. The goal is to create a similar interest and motivation across the country so any uninsured woman in America can get a free mammogram and a chance to live longer than Amy did.
